Top Ten Tuesday: Ten YA Books/Series For Anime Fans (FREEBIE WEEK)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's Top Ten topic is a FREEBIE, so I can make it anything I want. I thought about it and I decided to make a list of YA books that fans of anime and manga would enjoy or appreciate. All of these, at some point while I was reading them, had an anime feel to them or made me think that they would make an awesome anime series. Sometimes I read a book and wish it could be a movie, other times, I'll wish it could be animated. I know a lot of Otaku who might like to find a book or two to read, so I figured I'd make a list. There are many types of anime, I'll break my list down and explain why I think each book/series will appeal to anime fans.

A little background on me - I love anime (Japanese Animation). I have a huge collection of both anime and manga (Japanese Comics). I also love to draw it. I haven't been drawing much lately though because I don't have the time. I'll share some of my stuff at the end of this post.

Here are ten YA books/series for anime fans:

Japanese Mythology and Culture

Paper Gods  series by Amanda Sun

Ancient Japanese gods, drawings that come to life, Japanese culture, cute boys, spunky girl, romance, Yakuza, kendo...holy moly...this series has it all! If you like anime, read this series!!! The first two books are Ink and Rain. Shadow is a prequel eBook novella. Book three, Storm, will be released in June of this year.

Fantasy

The Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

An incredible fantasy world that is like an alternate Russia is ruled by magic and threatened by terrifying monsters who live in darkness. Alina Starkov must fight to save her world. There are kickass pirates in the second book. If you're an anime fan, you'll enjoy this series, especially if you also are a fan of fantasy.

About a girl who can manipulate the threads of time. It's got a steampunk element, chimera, lots of fighting and colorful characters. The Infinite will be available March 10th.

Trial By Fire by Josephine Angelini

This is a story about an ordinary schoolgirl who is pulled into an alternate world full of magic and monsters with the task of defeating her evil doppelganger. Sound familair?

Splintered, Unhinged & Ensnared by A.G. Howard

Alice in Wonderland is a pretty common theme in anime and manga. This gorgeous, modern retelling will appeal to otaku.

Sci-Fi/Space Opera

Avalon & Polaris by Mindee Arnett

If you like Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star, this is a must read. Also, fans of the tv show Firefly will love it.

Zodiac by Romina Russell

This stunning Space Opera just begs to be animated. The galaxy created by Romina Russell is colorful and unique. So much so, that only anime could do this justice. HERE is my review if you want to check it out.

Steampunk

Ticker by Lisa Mantchev

Wacky steampunk hijinks, fantastical contraptions, floating sky ships, action, mad scientists, augmented metal body parts, fun, fashion, romance and cake. This would make an awesome anime.

Military-ish

Reboot & Rebel by Amy Tintera

A deadly virus turns ordinary teens into super-soldiers who eventually fight back against the government.

Ultra-Violent

Vengeance Bound by Justina Ireland

Vengeance Bound is about a girl who owes the vicious, bloodthirsty Furies (of Greek mythology) for saving her life. They take up residence in her head and force her to hunt down "bad" men. She's a killer, but you sympathize with her because she was a victim and she's helping to stop others from becoming victims. It's like Dexter meets Elfen Lied (pictured below).

And as promised, here are some things I made:

What is your top ten topic today?

  4. This is an awesome list, and something I can definitely keep in mind as a high school librarian for getting those kids other ideas. And anyone who doesn't love Splintered is crazy in my book. Great list! Thanks for visiting me earlier!

    1. All of these would be great for anime loving teens, but be careful with Vengeance Bound, it's pretty violent. Although, it's no more so than the anime they've watched or manga they've read. Other books for anime fans are EON and EONA by Alison Goodman, SNOW LIKE ASHES by Sara Raasch and DEFY and IGNITE by Sara B Larson.

  5. This is such a great topic! I haven't checked out most of these series but I'll make time for them now. I love anime but sadly don't have enough time to watch them now, so hopefully these series will fill the hole
