Top Ten Things I Like/Dislike About Book Covers PLUS My Top 10 Favorite Covers of 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

At first, I wasn't sure I could think of ten things I like or dislike about book covers in general, but the more I though about it, the easier it got. I admit, I am a sucker for a pretty cover. Not to sound all judgy, but I've picked up many a book based on the cover alone and on the flip side, I've not picked up other books and eventually kicked myself for being so superficial because the book was awesome.

What I Like:

Shiny or Iridescent Covers- I'm basically like a magpie. Throw a little shimmer or sparkle on a cover and I will grab it no matter what it is.

Bright, Bold Colors- I'm more likely to stop for vivid colors than muted or drab ones.

Pretty Dresses- A giant, fluffy dress is an auto-buy, which is ironic since I don't even own a dress.

Texture/Soft books- The paper some book covers are printed on is velvety soft. It's usually first edition hardbacks or paperbacks. I like the extra sensory experience.

When all the Covers in a Series Match or Follow the Same Theme- Most series do this, but occasionally there are some that look completely different and that bugs me. My favorite series covers of all time are the Wicked Lovely books by Melissa Marr.

Weird Covers- They make me stop to say, "what the heck is this book about?!?"...and I buy it.

When a Cover Symbolizes or Hints at Things in the Story- I like a little Easter Egg Hunt. My favorite covers that do this are Lauren DeStefano's Chemical Garden trilogy covers. There is SO much going on there.

Reflections- For some reason, reflections draw me in....wait...does that make me narcissistic?

What I DON'T Like:

Changing Covers Mid-Series So My Books Don't Match- GRRRR! This makes me SO mad! I know, I know, the authors don't have a say in this, but still, it annoys me.

When a Hardcover Has a GORGEOUS Cover and the Paperback Cover is...meh- Sometimes it's because all the rest in the series are about to change (and I already discussed that! grr!), but other times there's no reason for it.

As promised, here are my ten favorite covers of 2014 (click on the titles for their Goodreads link):

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray (out November 4th)

Infinite by Jodi Meadows

Only Everything by Kieran Scott

Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White (out September 9th)

Such Sweet Sorrow by Jenny Trout

The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters (out October 14th)

The Jewel by Amy Ewing (out September 2nd)

The Girl Who Never Was by Skylar Dorset

(Don't You) Forget About Me by Kate Karyus Quinn

The Monster Within by Kelly Hashway

Picking your top ten favorite covers is kind of like taking a personality test. So, what do you think of my choices? What do you like or dislike about book covers? Let's talk. Leave me a comment if you want to, I'd appreciate it!

Read on, my Minions!
