Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Books I'll Need A LOT Of Convincing To Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's topic is supposed to be "Ten Books I'll Probably Never Read", but i really don't like to be negative and I never want to say "never" to a book. Instead, I'm going to modify it to "Ten Books I'll Need a Lot of Convincing To Read".

So, if you think I should read them, go ahead...convince me!

Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith

This just sounds weird and...buggy.

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James

Nope. This is the only one on the list I'm definitely not reading. I've read samples of the "writing" and it's bad. Plus, it's just really gross Twilight fan fiction with a bit of Criminal Minds thrown in.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Normally I love E. Lockhart, but I started this and had trouble getting into it. I ultimately put it down because I heard something AWFUL happens to her dogs. I'm NOT cool with that. Of all the books on the list, though, this is the one I'm most likely to give a chance.

I tried to read this a LONG time ago and had a hard time getting into it. I put it down, but people keep telling me to go back and stick with it. I...don't know....

Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

Incest...yuck.

Uncaged by John Sandford and Michele Cook

Experiments on animals? No thank you. I know it's a thriller, but when the words "post-surgical dog" are in the description, I....um....no.

Silent Alarm by Jennifer Banash

School shootings make me very uncomfortable. I'm sure it's a fantastic book, but it's too much for me.

Hate List by Jennifer Brown

Again, school shooting...

Ender's Game (or anything by Orson Scott Card)

Orson Scott Card is a homophobic douche, so I find it very difficult to support him. No matter how good his books may be, I'd feel icky reading them.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien

Ok, here's where everyone can hate me. I just don't think I can do it. I can't even sit through the painfully LONG movies. If there's less walking in the books...maybe. I read The Hobbit a long time ago and never felt the need to go back to that world.

Are any of these worth reading?

What books are on your 'probably not' list?

  2. Yeah I'm with you on 50 Shades and Forbidden. That one really weirded me out. Never read it, but after hearing what it was about I was like ooooookay...no!

  4. That's such a shame about LoTR. It is an incredibly dense book and the first half of the first book is glacially slow and bogged down in stuff, but they're really good. That's fair enough if they aren't for you though. I've seen a lot of Grasshopper Jungle and 50 Shades on the lists today!

  5. Uncaged sounds horrible. I don't think I could stand to read that even if it was great. I must admit I have been attracted to Grasshopper Jungle and even had it in my hands at the librarry but went no further. I think I am attracted to all the pretty green. Great list.

  7. That's awful about We were Liars, I was considering reading it, but probably wont now. I wish they had more warnings about that. I'm also currently reading anna dressed in blood so I'm hoping the incident won't be too bad!!

  8. This is an interesting list, I was so cautious whenever I hear about We Were Liars because I hear the plot twist blew everyone's minds! This isn't a very encouraging push as I'll be reading it this June or probably July.. hahaha
Also, I've just bought Forbidden. I know it's about incest, but that is what's intriguing, I need to know how that is planned out and how the author even dared to center a book around such a topic.
50 Shades of Grey I definitely won't be reading, I have tried and failed. I didn't know it was an erotica when I first picked it up and let's say it was the biggest shock of my life hahaha

  9. We Were Liars and Forbidden look pretty good, but I haven't read them yet! I'm a LotR movie FANATIC, but I never made it past the middle of The Two Towers book. My brother trudged through them and liked them though. Great list!

    Here are my Top Ten!

  10. The 50 Shades Trilogy I can't imagine ever reading... The hype of this series is a turn off for me. Great list of books! Thanks for leaving me a comment on my TTT for this week. Happy reading!

  11. I'm with you on many of these! Fifty Shades made my list too. I did love Dragon Tattoo, but you know what? Not every book is for every person. :)

  12. haha. Grasshopper Jungle, I forgot about that one. I wrote that one off because of the title. haha. I have no idea what it's about but I didn't even read the synopsis because of the title.
50 shades I read and enjoyed. But I read it for the enjoyment and to see what it was all about.
Forbidden is about incest!? WTF? Not gonna read that one...

    Great list! <3

  14. You're dead right about Grasshopper Jungle, but somehow it worked...

  15. Yep, I now hate you because of your LOTR prejudice. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. TOTALLY JUST KIDDING! Those books aren't for everyone by a long shot! I totally get why I've seen them on a couple folks list. And OH, the Orson Scott Card dilemma. I've read a few of his books (including Ender's Game) and loved them but it was before he became so vocal about his beliefs which I too find revolting. I won't read anything else by him but part of me wishes I had stayed ignorant of his douchebaggery. It's part of the reason I really like to know as little as possible about authors - I want to enjoy their books without being influenced by my opinion of the personality and beliefs writing them but then that feels like sticking my head in the sand a bit. It's something I wrestle with.

  16. I'm with you when it comes to Fifty Shades of Grey. I heard about Forbidden but when I found out it's about incest... well, it never made to my TBR list and I honestly forgot it even exist. Orson Scott Card is a homophobic? I didn't know that but I have to thank you for letting me know. Now I know to avoid anything by him because I sure will not support bigotry! And yeah, I will probably never read Lord of the Rings either. It's massive and I heard it's not that fast paced... I think I'll just stick to the movies.

    Great list, Michelle! :)

  17. Hate List is really good. I read it a while ago, but I remember it as being more about the aftermath of the shooting, and flashbacks about the time before--not so much about the event itself. It's more about forgiveness, and heroism, and whether you can ever really know someone. Of the books on your list, this is the one I would recommend.
(And yeah, if you're sensitive about dog stuff, We Were Liars would bother you.)

  18. I find it so funny I have seen Fifty Shades on every single list today...

I didn't know that about Orson Scott Card. That makes my not reading Enders Game even more likely. I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was in high school like 13 years ago. I liked it then, but I would never read it again.

  19. Actually I have read a lot of these books. The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit is not for everyone however, if you have any love for fantasy, it really is fantastic. As for Hate List by Jennifer Brown, I was blown away with how delicately she handled this tough topic and focused on the healing of everyone in the situation. When I was approached to review Grasshopper Jungle, I really thought there's no way that I could like this book, but it's far-reaching in its social mission and yet at the same time satisfyingly good at showing how relationships expand in duress. There's some tricky parts to it that could make a lot of people uncomfortable and so I realize it's definitely not for everyone. Not surprised that books from the 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy is making nearly everyone's list. Beth @ Perpetual New Girl

  20. I'm with you on most of that list. 50 Shades of Never Ever Reading It. I did read and enjoy LOTR which was a much better read than The Hobbit (The Hobbit bored me in places)-and I am not a fan of the fantasy genre! My dad used to read the books to me as bedtime stories so when other kids were getting told about fluffy ducks, I was getting Orcs and Goblins!

  21. I am with you on 50 Shades of Gray and LOTR! My hubby loves the LOTR series and I have watched the movies. But yeah, not going to read the books.

  22. 50 Shades of Grey was on my list too. I also doubt I'll ever read LOTR or The Hobbit. The one book I would recommend from your list is Hate List, honestly the school shooting itself is not focused on much, it's more about the aftermath and the events leading up to it.

  24. Why don't I remember the dog think in We Were Liars? Eh, it wasn't that good anyway. I really want to read Grasshopper Jungle and Forbidden though! I mean, I own them both. Incest fascinates me, that is really weird, no? But because I REALLY don't understand it. Like, I can't wrap my head around it, so it's a morbid curiosity!

And Fifty Shades is absolutely as horrible as you'd imagine- probably worse. I didn't think it could ever be as bad as it was, honestly. It outdid itself with shittiness ;) Oh, and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo- SO MUCH BOREDOM. Great list!

  25. You know how I feel about Grasshopper Jungle... now one of my fave all-time books! Matt even loved it! He read it on our 10 year wedding anniversary weekend & asked me... is it weird this is kind of sexy... and I loved him just a little more!

  26. Agree with you on not reading any Orson Scott card. Douche. I also wouldn't read the incest book or the ones with animal cruelty. *shudder* I just can't. I actually did read the Fifty Shades books, just so that I could say that I legitimately hate hate hate it and everything it stands for.

Great list. And yes, I know it's way late for TTT but I simply love this week's topic and didn't get time to read everyone's earlier in the week. Mine can be found at http://www.leiawriting.co.za/blog/top-ten-tuesdays-2/
