Top Ten Tuesday: Fairytales and Fairytale Retellings

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's Top Ten Topic is " Ten Fairytale Retellings I've Read/Want To Read (or you could do fairytales I want to be retold or fairytales I love)" I'm going to do a combination of all of that. I do like fairytales, but these days, I'm having a very hard time believing in them. I think that maybe the Grimm versions were probably more close to real life. I don't believe in happy endings. Anymore. But, here are some of my favorite fairtytales and retellings and some others that I really want to read.

My Favorite Fairytale

Beauty and the Beast. I love this story and I love the many retellings.

Beauty and the Beast Retellings

Beastly by Alex Flinn is my favorite B&B retelling. The book is sweet, funny and clever. The movie was awful. Don't judge this book by it's movie, please.

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge was a B&B retelling that I wasn't as big a fan of, but just about everyone else who's read it adores it.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas is more of a fantasy retelling of B&B. I haven't read it yet, but I REALLY want to. I NEED to read it!

Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay is a futuristic retelling of B&B that I need to read. I own it, that's the first step!

Sort of Like Beauty and the Beast

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George is based on the Nordic legend East of the Sun, West of the Moon, and it really reminded me of Beauty and the Beast. I absolutely LOVED this book!

Ice by Sarah Beth Durst is also a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon. I haven't had the pleasure of reading it yet, but I love the source material and the author and it sounds wonderful. I own it, just need to make time for it.

Cinderella

Cinder by Marissa Meyer is a fantastic, futuristic retelling of Cinderella. I'm so glad I finally read it! I'm looking forward to the rest in the series.

The Little Mermaid

The Summer of Chasing Mermaids is a contemporary retelling of The Little Mermaid. I really want to read this one.

All the Fairytales!

Into the Wild is a fantastic, fun and funny story about Rapunzel's daughter, Julie. Her mother escaped The Wild where fairytales live, along with many other "characters". The Wild wants them back and it's up to July to stop it. It's packed with fairytale goodness.

What are your favorite fairytales?

  1. I definitely agree with you! Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy-tales out there! I didn't know A Court of Thorns and Roses was a B&B retelling, all the more reason for me to check out the book.

  4. The only one on this list -- which, by the way, is awesome -- I've read is "Of Beast and Beauty". OMG, are you going to LOVE this one!! I highly recommend it to you!!! I own "Cruel Beauty", but haven't gotten to it yet. Yes, lots of people love it, but there's room for different tastes. I hope I like it. I own "Cinder", and also need to read it.

The one book from your list I want to read the most is "A Court of Thorns and Roses"!! I've heard SO many great things about it!!

I'm not familiar with the rest of your books, but they sound great! Hope you enjoy all of these!

Happy Tuesday!! : ) Here's my own list:

  12. I still really need to read Beastly. I have The Summer of Chasing Mermaids on my shelf. I hope I can get to it soon. I personally didn't really like Of Beast an Beauty, but I think I'm pretty much the only one haha. ACOTAR is good. I didn't love it like some of her other books i've read, but it was good. And yes! The Lunar Chronicles! I can't wait for Winter to come out! Awesome list!
