The Appearance of Annie van Sinderen by Katherine Howe

Description from Goodreads:

A haunting, contemporary love story from the New York Times bestselling author of Conversion.
It’s summertime in New York City, and aspiring filmmaker Wes Auckerman has just arrived to start his summer term at NYU. While shooting a séance at a psychic’s in the East Village, he meets a mysterious, intoxicatingly beautiful girl named Annie.
As they start spending time together, Wes finds himself falling for her, drawn to her rose petal lips and her entrancing glow. But there’s something about her that he can’t put his finger on that makes him wonder about this intriguing hipster girl from the Village. Why does she use such strange slang? Why does she always seem so reserved and distant? And, most importantly, why does he only seem to run into her on one block near the Bowery? Annie’s hiding something, a dark secret from her past that may be the answer to all of Wes’s questions .

Why I'm excited:

Well, I'm just very intrigued by this book. I don't know exactly what to expect. Is this girl a ghost? Is she just hiding something? What is her secret? This is still considered YA, but the characters are a little older than usual and judging from Katherine Howe's previous books, The Appearance of Annie Sinderen may end up being more like literary fiction. This is supposed to be a mystery/romance and I'm really looking forward to meeting these characters and hearing their story.

And that cover! It's so simple yet so interesting. It's as if the hand on the door is beckoning me...

It says, come here. Read me. But not until September.

What are you waiting to read?

  15. I agree, that cover is just super creepy and intriguing. I kind of like how the synopsis casually drops random NYC locations and details, it makes me wonder if the city will be kind of a character in itself (which I love in books and movies). Nice pick.

  23. This sounds fun and creepy! The cover reminds me of the movie, The Labyrinth. And this makes me want to read the book even more. Like you, I want to know things before even starting it. Is the girl a ghost, or is it even more complicated?
