What's it about?
Jesse Copeland's life in the hot Florida sun in hardly perfect. His father had been fighting a tough battle with cancer and after his death, Jesse and his mother are left struggling to pay the bills. At only eighteen, Jesse has to leave childhood behind to help earn money for his family and help care for his little sister. His job as a mechanic isn't going to be enough, so when he hears about a car race being sponsored by Shep Bradley, he jumps at the chance to win the prize money. Of course, it's a bit more complicated than just entering and winning a race. Shep Bradley is his father's former nemesis on the race track. Shep and his father were once friends but something happened that made them bitter enemies. It's Jesse's only chance to get enough money to save his family's house, so he has no choice but to enter and try to win.
One day, a beautiful girl drives into Jesse's life. She's got a bitchin' Camaro and legs that go for miles, but she's not just an ordinary girl. Her name is Brooke Bradley. She's Shep Bradley's step-daughter and she has a propsition for Jesse. She wants him to help her get her car ready so she can enter the race...against the wishes of her father. It's a risky proposition, but she's offering him money that can help his family. If Shep finds out, it could spell trouble for them both. Even more dangerous are the electrifying sparks that are flying between Brooke and Jesse.
Can these star-crossed lovers make it to the finish line or will they crash and burn on the twists and turns on the road ahead? Rev up your reader engines and jump into the driver seat (or a recliner) and find out in Racing Hearts!
My Thoughts!
Woo! Hoo! Racing Hearts sure lives up to it's name! This is a fast paced, fun read with a captivating, fan yourself type romance with a Romeo and Juliet feel. Yes, their love is forbidden, but I don't think it's going to stop Jesse and Brooke...I don't think it can! They have great chemistry!
(It's YA friendly, but NA fans will enjoy it, too.)
I really liked the little touches that Laura Lascarso added into the story, it made the characters seem so real. I adored that the mechanics that work in the garage with Jesse are addicted to soap operas. Even the characters in the background are very well fleshed out, which makes it even more enjoyable to read. I also, of course, enjoyed the fast cars! I'm impressed by Laura's automotive knowledge. Personally, I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I do love drag racing! I live near the Maple Grove Raceway and let me tell you, there is nothing like the sound and smell of a car that's about to go 200 - 300 mph. In Racing Hearts, Laura Lascarso definitely captures the feeling of an exciting race that's about to begin. I have the need for...MORE! I can't wait to see where the story goes next! I'm liking the serial novella format, it's kind of like tuning into an episode of a tv show, so bring on Book Two!
