Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Underrated YA Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic is "Ten underrated books or authors". I interpret that as, ten books I read and thought were awesome that I think deserve more recognition for their awesomeness.

My list...

The Brokenhearted by Amelia Kahaney. I loved this book. It came out last October and the sequel releases this October. Anyone who likes dark, gritty superhero stories should read this (think Smallville). It's about a rich, ballerina who finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up almost dying. She's saved by a mad scientist who implants a mechanical hummingbird heart in her chest. The heart gives her super speed and strength and she becomes a vigilante but people start to see her as a sign of hope. She also uses her ballet to her advantage when she trains to fight, which is really cool. It's like a superhero origin story and it is badass.

Sleepless by Cyn Balog. This is seriously one of my favorite books. It is a dreamy tale of a Sandman who falls in love with one of his charges. Contact with his charges is forbidden, but he finds out that she is in danger and has to decide if he should save her and risk never seeing her again.

The Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King. She's pretty well known now, but not many people are familiar with this book. It is made of awesome and topped with awesomesauce. It's about a badass female pirate who was cursed to live out 100 lifetimes as a dog before becoming human again. When her curse finally comes to an end, she's stuck inside the body of a modern day teenaged girl, but she retained all of her memories of the past as well as from when she lived as dogs...and she wants her treasure back. Arrgh!

Mystic City by Theo Lawrence. I talk about this book all the time, so just go read it. Seriously though, it's a dystopian, urban fantasy with a Romeo & Juliet style romance. It's got magic, mystery and tons of action. Fans of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare will enjoy it.

The Beautiful and the Cursed by Page Morgan. A gorgeous, historical fantasy that has  Gargoyles and Demons doing battle in 1800s Paris. It is a true gothic beauty that fans of The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare and The Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray will love.

Troy High by Shana Norris. A hilarious and adorable retelling of The Iliad by Homer. It does for the Iliad what 10 Things I Hate About You did for The Taming of the Shrew

Sisters of Misery by Megan Kelley Hall. A beautifully written mystery/thriller that will keep you guessing and keep you up late.

Another Faust by Daniel & Dina Nayeri. A truly unique tale of a group of teens who get involved in Faustian Bargains. They become addicted to the powers they've been given and have to face the consequences.

The Pace by Shelena Shorts. A truly original take on immortality. This book will leave  you with your jaw on the floor and you'll be screaming for the next book in the series to find out what happens next. An amazing must-read book.

Stealing Heaven by Elizabeth Scott. A wonderful contemporary book about a girl who moves around with her con-woman mother, taking advantage of people. When they find their next target and move to a sleepy beach town, she actually feels like this is a place she could fit in. She has to decide if she's willing to turn her back on her mother and the only life she's ever known to have a chance at the life she's always wanted. Fans of Sarah Dessen will love this and will go searching out other books by Elizabeth Scott.

What books do you think need more recognition for their awesomeness?

  2. The Dust of a 100 Dogs! I totally forgot about that one. Great list. The only book I've read is Troy High, which I thought was such a brilliant concept, "Spartans" versus "Trojans". I wish it was more romantic, though....I'm sucker for a good romance. Stealing Heaven sounds like that movie with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver...Heartbreakers, ahaha.

  3. I love Elizabeth Scott, but haven't read Stealing Heaven yet!! I loved Love You Hate You Miss You the most of her books so far, but I want to read more of them. I also think Troy High would be a book I would be into. I've never heard of it before, but I'm going to look into it :) Thanks for stopping by my list!

  5. I love all AS King but Dust was my first book of hers and I loved it! My mom even read it and I got a signed copy for her as well!

I like Another Faust but it was pretty obvious who's voice wrote the paragraph between the brother and sister. Though their ability to read and live in time is my favorite super power ever invented... and may be worth a deal with the devil. LOL

I also really loved Sleepless! It was a fresh concept and delicious!
