Many years in the future, humans have become an endangered species and darkness-dwelling monsters called Fade have taken over the planet. The Arclight is a human stronghold fitted with powerful beams of light protecting it, keeping the photophobic Fade out. The light is safety. The light is life. Going outside of the light is certain death, except for one girl, Marina. She survived out in the darkness, the only one to ever do so. She was rescued from the dark just beyond the protective walls and brought to safety, but in order to save her, other lives were lost and changed forever. Some people at Arclight see her as a last hope for humanity, others fear her and see her as the beginning of the end. Marina doesn't remember anything about her rescue and doesn't even remember her life before Arclight. A Fade attack breaches the walls one night and Marina knows it was because of her. This leads to the capture of one of the creatures and it's presence triggers her memories. She knows the only way to find the truth is to go back into the darkness. What she finds there will change the world.
Arclight is a thrilling, sci-fi dystopian that is kind of scary and also scary good. Josin L. McQuein has definitely made a fan out of me. The writing and world-building are the stars of this creepy-cool book. If you like your dystopian futures dark (figuratively and literally) and sci-fi heavy, you must read Arclight. The concept is quite unique. It's frightening and beautiful, morose yet hopeful, and the Fade creatures are SO COOL. I get goosebumps just thinking about them. The sequel, Meridian, is out now, but DO NOT look at the synopsis for it before you read Arclight, it will spoil it!
